In a democracy, the people who really matter…who should be in charge of their destiny…
who must be involved in governance…who should have the power to ensure justice and fair play are Citizens.
However, it often happens that this power is either lost or surrendered or usurped. When that happens
it is the duty of each one of us to get it back. This is the endeavour that the National Network For India (NNFI)
is undertaking. We will harness the new force of Internet communication linkages to connect the
many individuals and groups who are already active at the grassroots level. These concerned citizens are
fighting to secure citizen rights…to ensure that citizens act responsibly. The question is: can we
enhance and increase such efforts by helping to multiply the numbers of active citizens across the
country? Our past experience indicates that we can do so if we innovate ways to reach out and empower
people. We have found that so many Indians are keen to participate, but do not how to do so.
Visiting our web site, will enable people to connect with experienced groups…learn from other’s
successes and failures. Get started in their own locality…on their own issues…to improve the lives of
their local community and neighbourhood. Such small efforts, when multiplied, can become a vast
groundswell forcing the establishment to change…to finally enable us to benefit from the just rewards
of a working democracy: Good Governance The fundamental belief that drives NNFI to even attempt
such a challenging effort is our faith in the genius of India and Indians. Across the country, over many
years Indians have banded together to confront establishments bent on subjugating us…on exploiting
those that may be weak in body, but not in spirit. Sadly, such burdens continue even today, over 50 years
after independence. But, in the past few years something has started to change. The dispossessed and
the disadvantaged; the old and the young; the urban dweller and the villager have shown signs that things
as they are will no longer do…they must change to provide a better life for all…not just for the few so-called
In-Power ‘Elite.’ Groups, large and small, are organizing to fight for Citizens’ Rights and they are winning!
But small victories scattered around the country can only be a beginning. To Win the War for
Justice & Equality, the movement of Citizen’s Action must grow much faster…must include many more
people…must generate a grassroots momentum that ensure that things change. This can only happen
if the Youth of India get active in the exciting endeavour to create a Better India. This is NNFI’s belief.
